MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
(MLT)
Medical Lab Technicians play a crucial role in the overall functionality of hospitals and clinics, focusing on the science and technology aspects of healthcare. MLTs work with lab managers, physicians and technologists to perform a variety of tests. Using specialized instruments, they perform testing on biological specimens and process these to find data that plays a key role in the identification and subsequent treatment of a wide variety of diseases.
Areas of medical laboratory training include microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, transfusion medicine, toxicology and molecular diagnostics.
Job Duties
- Collect and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis using established guidelines
- Maintain laboratory records, reports and statistics
- Prepare samples for reference testing
- Perform tests to determine the health of blood and tissue
Education/Licensure Requirements
- Associate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Health Science Technology required
- BLS training required (can be obtained at PMC)
- Nationally recognized certifying agency regulations (ASCP, NCA, etc.) required or registry eligible
