CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMIST

Phlebotomists are essential members of the patient care team and works closely with other phlebotomists, nurses and physicians to interact with patients of all ages to retrieve blood samples for further lab analysis. They are also tasked with labeling samples appropriately and logging all information related to tests performed and samples taken into a database.

Phlebotomists possess a knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy and lab testing. They are detail- oriented and exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills and are committed to providing a positive patient experience.

Job Duties

  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, arterial) according to established procedures
  • Distribute specimens to appropriate laboratory sections for testing/processing
  • Reassure anxious patients through good communication skills
  • Assist laboratory technicians in organizing and testing lab samples

Education/Licensure Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Formal phlebotomy training and certification by national accreditation agency required
  • Current BLS training required. (can be obtained at PMC)

PATHWAY TO BECOMING A PHLEBOTOMIST

You can study to be a certified phlebotomist – right at Pikeville Medical Center – while getting paid to be trained! There is no cost for classes. Here’s information about what to expect:

  • Four (4) week program during which selected candidates will earn $7.25/hour
  • Selected candidates will attend 60 hours of instructional class time.
  • Selected candidates will complete 80 hours of clinical time.
  • During training, selected candidates will:
    • Work under the direct supervision of a Certified Phlebotomist, MLS/MT or MLT
    • Learn how to obtain blood samples from patients by skin punctures, venipunctures and/or arterial punctures in a safe manner ensuring the integrity of the specimen.
    • Identify appropriate device and specimen collection containers
    • Accurately link specimens to correct patient using the established laboratory protocols designed to maintain foolproof identification and matching of samples.
    • Prepare patient for phlebotomy to include applying tourniquet as appropriate, swabbing puncture area with antiseptic and safely inserting a needles into vein/skin
    • Apply treatment to puncture site following procedure, label specimen(s) in the presence of the patient, properly dispose of tourniquet and sharps, store and transport specimen(s).
    • Distribute specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections and process specimens
  •  Failure to successfully complete the training program as scheduled or pass the certification exam as scheduled will terminate the student’s employment at PMC and participation in the training program.

  • PMC phlebotomy students must be 18 years of age to participate in the program

Upon completion of 140 hours of training in PMC’s Phlebotomy Training Program, students will take the phlebotomist national certificate exam.
