MEDICAL ASSISTANT
(MA)

Medical Assistants work in outpatient or ambulatory care settings such as medical offices or clinics. MAs are instrumental in helping patients feel at ease and assisting licensed providers in the healthcare setting. Medical assistants are cross-trained to perform administrative and clinical duties and are responsible for obtaining the patient’s medical history. Many times, Medical Assistants are the first point of contact with patients and are responsible for updating medical histories and contact information in patient files.

The job of medical assistant is attractive for people wanting to go into the medical field but are looking for a Monday through Friday job during the day.

Job Duties

  • Read and follow written and oral medical orders from physicians
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and diverse patient populations
  • Provide basic patient care as ordered
  • Administer medication and treatments as ordered within the scope of practice
  • Assist other healthcare professionals in performing exams, diagnostic procedures and treatments as well as minor medical procedures.

Education/Licensure Requirements

  • Successful completion of medical assistant program or proof of registration or certificate required
  • One year of experience as a medical assistant preferred
  • Current BLS training required (can be obtained at PMC)

PATHWAY TO BECOMING A MEDICAL ASSISTANT

You can study to be a Medical Assistant – right at Pikeville Medical Center – while getting paid to be trained! There is no cost of classes. Here’s information about what to expect:

  • Eight week program during which selected candidates will earn $12.64/hour
  • Selected candidates will complete six (6) weeks of course work, four (4) weeks of clinical rotations and two (2) weeks of skills check offs.
  • During training, selected candidates will gain competencies to:
    • Obtain patient consent for care and ensure patient confidentiality.
    • Assist patients in preparation for physical examinations and procedures.
    • Obtain patient’s height, weight and vital signs.
    • Obtain, verify and record patient’s medical history.
    • Perform routine clinical and laboratory procedures under the supervision of a physician.
    • Collect, prepare and transport specimens for laboratory analysis.
    • Administer medications and treatments as ordered.
    • Perform mathematical calculations for drug dosages.
    • Perform blood draws and administer injections.
    • Assist other healthcare professionals in performing exams, diagnostic procedures, treatments and minor medical procedures.
    • Assist with medical emergencies and demonstrate emergency preparedness.
    • Adhere to infection control/safety guidelines.
    • Demonstrate understanding of basic laboratory procedures.
    • Instruct and educate patients on treatments and procedures.
    • Dispose of hazardous waste and other materials.
    • Inventory control – ordering and storing of supplies.
    • Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECG).
    • Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and employee instruction.
    • Ensure compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Failure to successfully complete the training program as scheduled or pass the certification exam as scheduled will terminate the student’s employment at PMC and participation in the training program.
