MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
MEDICAL LAB SCIENTIST
(MT/MLS)

Medical Technologists/Medical Lab Scientists are highly skilled professionals who collaborate very closely with physicians and medical laboratory technicians in diagnosing and monitoring disease processes such as anemia, leukemia, metabolic imbalances and infectious diseases.

Medical Technologists can hold supervisor roles and be promoted to management positions within their department.

Job Duties

  • Examine and analyze blood, body fluids, tissues and cells
  • Utilize microscopes, cell counters and other high- precision lab equipment
  • Prepare blood components for transfusion
  • Monitor and ensure the accuracy of test results
  • Perform fertility testing

Education/Licensure Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • Nationally recognized certifying agency and CLIA regulation required (ASCP, NCA, etc.) or registry available
  • BLS training required (can be obtained at PMC)

PATHWAY TO BECOMING AN MT/MLS

  • Take the ACT test
  • College Readiness Track
  • Anatomy and/or Physiology
  • AP English Literature/Composition or Dual Credit Literature/Composition Class
  • AP Biology or Dual Credit Biology Class
  • AP Chemistry or Dual Credit Chemistry

These classes are not required for admission to all schools, but are recommended in most instances.

University of Kentucky

University of Kentucky offers a Bachelor’s Degree program in Medical Laboratory Science at its campus in Hazard, Kentucky. At the end of the program, graduates will be eligible to take the certification examination (ASCP) at the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) level.

Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) offers a Bachelor’s Degree program in Medical Laboratory Science on its campus in Richmond, Kentucky. At the end of the program, graduates will be eligible to take the certification examination (ASCP) at the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) level.

Bellarmine University

Bellarmine University offers a Bachelor’s Degree program in Medical Laboratory Science in a hybrid format that provides students with an online schedule for the majority of the program with in-person labs for added support. At the end of the program, graduates will be eligible to take the certification examination (ASCP) at the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) level.

The schools mentioned above are each accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). Students graduating from these programs are eligible to take the national certification exam to obtain the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification through ASCP.
