PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN
(PCT)

A Patient Care Technician is an important part of the overall patient care team who addresses many individual patient’s needs. PCTs work under the supervision of a licensed nurse or practitioner. Once hired at PMC, Patient Care Technicians will receive training in phlebotomy, EKG technology and nurse aide skills.

Many begin their career in healthcare as a patient care technician. This position can also serve as a pathway for non-medical staff to transition into a patient-centered career at PMC.

Job Duties

  • Provide point of care testing such as glucoscans as needed
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, mobility and transfers
  • Prepare and collect specimens from patients through phlebotomies.
  • Perform 12-lead electrocardiograms

Education/Licensure Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Current BLS training required (can be obtained at PMC)
  • Completion of nursing fundamentals course or one year experience as a nursing assistant preferred

PATHWAY TO BECOMING A PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN

You can study to be a Patient Care Technician – right at Pikeville Medical Center – while getting paid to be trained! There is no cost of classes. Here’s information about what to expect:

  • 10-week program during which selected candidates earn wages. Trainees have the choice of being paid:
    • $7.25/hour (minimum wage) and being eligible for a bonus when they transfer to a job as a PMC Patient Care Technician; or
    • $13.50/hour during training with no bonus eligibility
  • Selected candidates will complete 86 hours of training over a course of 10 weeks
  • During training, selected candidates will gain competencies to:
    • Provide supportive care to patients under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practitioner
    • Work effectively as an interdisciplinary team member; support and assist team members in all activities
    • Communicate verbally and in writing, in effective and efficient manners with all documentation, with all coworkers, patients, visitors and physicians.
    • Perform and assist with technical skills as defined in the scope of practice
    • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served.
    • Perform blood glucose testing
    • Provide external care to indwelling urinary catheter.
    • Provide and maintain a safe, comfortable environment.
    • Care for the dying patient.
    • Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and employee instruction.
    • Ensure compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Failure to successfully complete the training program as scheduled or pass the certification exam as scheduled will terminate the student’s employment at PMC and participation in the training program.
